Homemade Candied Apples

maybe it was beginners luck.....?</div>

prior to making candied apples i had looked at numerous recipes that mentioned it takes practice to get a good bubble free coat. well i got lucky....this was my first attempt at candied anything other than homemade mints.</div>

jason made this recipe seem like a piece of cake so i gave it a try.</div>

i changed a few things to it. i wanted to make them a bright color so the only variations to his recipe are the following:</div>

i substituted water for juice and omitted the cinnamon. i added one tablespoon of vanilla, two tablespoons of white food coloring and 2 tablespoons of blue food coloring after removing the sugar from the heat. </div>

we had some peanut m&m's as well as some sprinkles so a few got to stay plain while the others got dressed up a bit. mr. B invited his neighborhood buddies over and they all approved! daisy mae even got a sample when B dropped his in the grass. </div>

Use an adhesive (glue, mod podge, etc) to cover the frame.   Apply your googly eye varieties to the adhesive. Decorate as desired and insert a spooky photo or create one with stamps/stickers etc.</span></div>

One tip I will point out is to always carve your pumpkins by cutting a hole in the bottom rather than the top. I buy up all of them I can find for fun projects like this. Get a small wooden plaque  and paint it black. Decapitate (sounds so gross) your crow/raven and glue him (or her) to the plaque.    I printed ’nevermore’ onto paper from an old book and made a  “name- plate.” </span><span lang="en-US" style="line-height: 119%;"><o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

She had some of the scariest looking owls I had ever seen...but it was the cute little snow owls that made me fall in love. People constantly give me owl figurines and décor items they find at the thrift or at yard sale. While I really do appreciate the kindness I have an abundance owls in every part of my house. The one in the wreath just happens to be one of them. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

you might like to do your luminaries a different way...</div>

 </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">i remember the first time i read this poem {<a href="http://www.heise.de/ix/raven/Literature/Lore/TheRaven.html">The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe</a>} in school. it has forever been in my mind and i have a weird fascination with ravens/crows. i love to watch them when they land in the feeders and dominate the yard. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">every year close to halloween time the dollar tree always has styrofoam crows. you have to get there early to buy them because they sell out fast. when i first see them appear i go to all three of our local stores and buy them. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">this year i wanted to craft something different with them besides just hanging and sitting them in mr b's room.....so here is what i came up with. </span><br />

</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">with the help of mr. b we started off by using some <u>sandpaper</u> and sanding an <u>unfinished small wooden plaque</u> from our local craft store (the hob). then i let mr b <u>paint</u> it black. we didnt paint the back side because i plan on hanging it onto the wall but if the back will be seen by others i suggest painting it or covering it with some <u>scrapbook paper</u> or a page from an old book{possible with the poem The Raven on it.....}</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">once the plaque was dried i took some sandpaper and roughed up the paint a little to make it look more spooky/old.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">then i glued the raven head to the plaque with <u>tacky glue</u> {ps::DO NOT USE HOT GLUE....for those of you who act before you think the hot glue will melt the styrofoam} </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div>after i let that dry for a little while i took a blank <u>page</u> from the back of an <u>old book</u> and used my <u>computer</u> to print out the word "nevermore" {if you dont have an old book page you can use scrapbook paper or plain printer paper. i try to use recycled items but any of them will work} after i printed the page i tore the word out and glued it to the plaque using a glue stick. and now the raven is nevermore.....literally since i have beheaded him.<br />
