Earth Day, first observed in 1970, takes place on April 22 of each year. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 22 million people across the nation joined forces that first Earth Day to advocate for better stewardship of natural resources. The EPA, along with the Clean Water and Clean Air acts, trace their roots to that day.</div>

Over the decades, the event has evolved into a global celebration of nature, with people across the world discussing ways to “go green” and highlighting the continued need to improve environmental protections. April is now even commonly dubbed “Earth Month,” giving this important topic a full 30-days of attention.</div>

There is another green, and related, holiday tucked into this month: National Arbor Day, the fourth Friday of April. It is meant to encourage the planting of and caring for trees. On the first Arbor Day, which took place in Nebraska in 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted, according to the Arbor Day Foundation. By 1920 every state in the country officially recognized the holiday.</div>

Maybe you try to be green all year round, or maybe these April occasions serve as an “Oh, I meant to do that,” reminder. Either way, the reality is while it can be challenging to maintain a green lifestyle, it is ok to begin by doing small tasks on a daily basis. Given enough time, eventually these small tasks build into a routine that becomes natural and expands into new eco-friendly activities.</div>

I am constantly trying to create activities and crafts for my family that have a low impact on the earth, repurposing found objects, connecting with the outdoors, cooking from whole foods. I then share these projects on my blog, Green Owl Crafts (<a href="https://www.blogger.com/greenowlcrafts.com">greenowlcrafts.com</a>), using lots of pictures and detailed instructions so anybody can give them a try.</div>

We are not the ‘greenest’ family, but we do things everyday that help reduce our carbon footprint: recycling, being conscious of energy and water use and reusing as many things as possible. No matter where you fall on that scale, you can let Earth Month inspire you to make small changes in your everyday life, and even in your community, that have a positive impact on the world around you.</div>

Planting a tree is a great way to celebrate Arbor Day and Earth Day. It’s more than just beautifying an area. Trees are beneficial to the environment in numerous ways. They help produce oxygen and filter out pollutants to clean the air. In addition, trees help prevent erosion and preserve water levels in the soil. If you have the space, add a tree to your yard. Or visit <a href="https://www.blogger.com/arborday.org/celebrate">arborday.org/celebrate</a> for nearby tree planting events.</div>

For your home, fruit and shade trees are a good choice. In the first instance, there’s the bonus of enjoying fruit eventually, and as a result providing food for the family, neighbors and friends. Shade trees planted in the right location can help keep a home cool and reduce energy costs.</div>

<strong>Start a Garden</strong>
A garden doesn’t have to be a complex undertaking and it is a great way for families to spend time together. A vegetable garden enables you to enjoy foods that are grown from your own two hands, cutting out the middleman and reducing the carbon footprint made by delivery trucks and trips to grocery stores. Even people who live in apartments can start a small garden on their patios using recycled barrels, containers or window boxes. For those with no outdoor space, many herbs can be grown indoors as well.</div>

Teach children that garbage does not simply disappear by finding ways to reuse packaging such as plastic milk jugs. By repurposing these, we can reduce waste, create useful items and save money. All while spending quality time with the kids. This project allows you to enhance your green thumb by reusing items destined for your recycling bin.</div>

<strong>Materials</strong>:
Milk Jugs or 2-Liter Bottles (rinsed well)
Utility Knife
Scissors
Potting Soil
Seeds</div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: left;"> For a perfect seed-starting flat, use the bottom portion of a milk jug.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;"> Begin by washing the container to remove milk residue.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Next, measure three inches up from the bottom; then carefully cut off the bottom portion with a utility knife.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Take the bottom portion and poke 3-4 drainage holes by cutting small slits.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Children can fill the jug bottom with soil and plant the seeds according to the package.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Place the seed starting tray on top of another jug bottom, without drainage holes, to capture water runoff.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">After planting, water seeds well and put them in a sunny area. To keep moisture in, simply set the top of the jug back over the planted seeds, creating a terrarium.</li>

anyways...when i announced my pregnancy in may i had so many friends asking me if i were going to have a baby shower and that they wanted to get me a gift. well....while i LOVE giving gifts and making things for others i am not so good at accepting gifts.....let alone opening them in front of people. so i started to get anxiety. also, im a little old school and since i had already had a baby shower with my first born (10 years ago) i felt like it was rude to ask for another shower.</div>

my former boss and one of my best good friends charlene. she really has a heart of gold. her gift was not only thrifty but the most sentimental. two of the gifts she gave me belonged to her son anthony sanders. he passed away when he was 16 years old on August 16, 2001 after a short battle with cancer. he was her only child and it is heartbreaking to think of the pain of not only loosing a child, but not being able to prevent it from happening. she is like a second mother to me and i love her dearly. the little tennis shoes were anthony's first pair and they even have a little alabama red clay on the bottom to remind me that he wore them in the yard. the baseball was one of his prized possessions...signed by the 1992 atlanta braves team. i will forever cherish these gifts....and all of them i received. THAT is why i recommend a thrifty baby shower. sometimes the greatest gift of all cannot be purchased new off the shelf....it it in someone's home or an item that can be recycled from the goodwill or thrift store.</div>

They were 15.99 for the both but it was half off furniture the day we went so I got them for $7.50! What a deal! This awesome fabric...which took me hours to pick out, was only $2 a yard. I got it at Joann's on red tag half off clearance! The orange paint came from Home Depot and I got the sample size. It was less than $3 and I still have half of it left. The chalkboard paint was in my stock and I have gotten so much use out of the can I purchased about a year ago.</div>

here are the supplies i used to make these ornaments:<br />

tree limb<br />
hand saw<br />
twine<br />
drill with small bit<br />
chalkboard paint<br />
paintbrush<br />
sanding paper<br />
chalk<br />

find a tree limb that is the width you prefer. keep in mind larger sizes will not hand properly on a tree so keep it about 3 inches. use your handsaw and slice as many pieces off that you would like. always do a few more than needed just in case you mess up on something.<br />

get your sand paper and sand the side you are going to paint just enough to get the grain of the wood smooth. go ahead and drill a hole at the top portion...not too close to the top to prevent splitting or breaking.<br />

 have a huge collection of corks. People always seem to want to collect 
and save things to give to me so that I can turn them into something 
new. For the past couple of years I have been trying to decide what to 
do with them<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>aside from storing them in empty plastic pickle jugs.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>So, this is what I decided to try!</span></div>

<span lang="en-US" style="font-family: "Book Antiqua"; font-size: 11.0pt; language: en-US; mso-ansi-language: en-US;">You will need an Exacto knife or sharp tool to carve the cork from the top. Mini magnets and hot glue are also needed.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Once you have a good depth for the cork<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>adhere your magnets and allow the hot glue to dry.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Use small plants that need little water (air plants or succulents or cacti<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>will work best) and insert them into your cork. Fill with dirt as needed to help secure the plant.</span></div>

<span lang="en-US" style="font-family: "Book Antiqua"; font-size: 11.0pt; language: en-US; mso-ansi-language: en-US;">Back before Christmas the ladies of </span><span lang="en-US" style="font-family: "Book Antiqua"; font-size: 11.0pt; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; language: en-US; mso-ansi-language: en-US;"><a href="http://www.lakewedoweelife.com/" target="_blank">Lake Wedowee Life</a> </span><span lang="en-US" style="font-family: "Book Antiqua"; font-size: 11.0pt; language: en-US; mso-ansi-language: en-US;">(Leisel, Kelly and I) took a day trip to Scott’s Antique Market south of Atlanta where we met Dann Quinn from Chattanooga (see photo below) selling his one of a kind driftwood décor pieces. We talked to him for a good while about his pieces and told him a little about who we were and what we did. He then showed us how to make these mantle pieces we all liked. </span></div>

From Ketchepedrakee Creek all the way down to Fox Creek. Anywhere we saw a good collection along the lake bed we would pull over, slide on our rain boots, and gather pieces that were unique. We now have a huge collection on the front porch that I have no clue how to use.</span></div>

For both crafts pictured I let the driftwood dry out, then I brushed it off with a broom or a small hand brush.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>I tossed around different ways I could make the driftwood from Lake Wedowee look a little less muddy, and in the end I used some grey paint watered down to give a white washed look. </span></div>

I used a scrap piece of wood from another project for the base.</span></div>

<span lang="en-US" style="font-family: "Book Antiqua"; font-size: 11.0pt; language: en-US; mso-ansi-language: en-US;">Using a jigsaw, I flattened the end of each piece, then used a drill to get a hole started through the base and the driftwood. Then I secured it with a screw. I painted the edges of the base with white to give it a finished look. Get creative with yours and send us some photos if you make one! </span></div>

im so glad i got the idea to try to make these...it started when i saw in Lowe's Creative Ideas magazine. the tutorial they showed looked so easy...weeeellll...it was easy but the first time was hard! and there are some flaws to their recipe!</div>

mix equal parts of perlite/quickrete/peat moss into a large container (make sure your gloves are on!)</div>

for the three planters that I made I used 4 quarts of each mixed together. then add your water. add water until you have the consistency of cottage cheese and when you ball up the mixture it kinda stays together. (see above photo)</div>

next spray your containers with your pam/cooking spray. for the first attempt i followed the instructions and used a separate container to stack on the inside and press the edges together. (see photo below of containers inside the bag) this method made it difficult to remove them. it messed up my containers because even with the pam i had to break them to remove them. i waited 2 days and tried to remove from the molds and this was the result.</div>

sadly i had to start over...so i did a little research and saw a video from a few years ago on <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/268962/hypertufa-pots" target="_blank">martha stewart's (my hero) show</a>. they did not use an interior mold instead they just packed it into the mold(see photo above)...because who cares what the inside of your planter looks like?? you are gonna have it covered with soil & plants!</div>

 after a few days i used a rubber hammer (or in my case a rubber tip for a regular hammer) and beat lightly around the edges. slide it out of the mold and use a piece of sand paper to sand any rough edges. place them back into the plastic bag and store them in a dry place for a few weeks. it's very humid here in the south and i found i had to wait an extra week to make sure they were cured. i did not drill a hole in them like it says to...not sure if thats going to be a problem but for drainage i used rocks in the bottom layer. i was too afraid to try to drill since my first batch fell apart and this had been 6 weeks in the making since i first started the project. here is my end result.</div>

so far they have held up nicely even in the rain. it's been 2 weeks and i havent had any problems. my next batch i will be using some of the techniques martha mentioned for adding texture and patterns...might even try some concrete dye to make colored planters for christmas gifts this year!</div>

It has a plastic frame but the frame is in excellent shape AND the mirror is high quality....really a good piece. It is about 4 feet high too so i really really wanted it in my living room since I have no wall decor in there at all.</div>

I ended up getting the mirror for $5!! WOW i couldnt believe it! I took it home and immediately got ready to paint it white! since i have been talked out of painting my living room white i decided that most of my wall decor will be white and i wish i could have a white couch but with an 8 year old boy in the house that is not gonna happen! plus i am so clumsy....it would probably be me that makes the first stain on it!</div>
