DIY Wood Medallion Chalkboard Christmas Ornament

here is an easy DIY project that would be super cute for teacher gifts, random acts of kindness gifts or just to have on your own tree.<br />
<br />
here are the supplies i used to make these ornaments:<br />
<br />
tree limb<br />
hand saw<br />
twine<br />
drill with small bit<br />
chalkboard paint<br />
paintbrush<br />
sanding paper<br />
chalk<br />
<br />
find a tree limb that is the width you prefer. keep in mind larger sizes will not hand properly on a tree so keep it about 3 inches. use your handsaw and slice as many pieces off that you would like. always do a few more than needed just in case you mess up on something.<br />

get your sand paper and sand the side you are going to paint just enough to get the grain of the wood smooth. go ahead and drill a hole at the top portion...not too close to the top to prevent splitting or breaking.<br />

use chalkboard paint to create your surface. allow it to dry 12-24 hours.</div>

prime your chalkboard surface by lightly running the chalk over the chalk paint area and the cleaning off with a dry/lightly damp cloth.</div>

I got a little help drawing out the stars. I wanted an imperfect yet recognizable shape to be my star and this is what a star looks like when you focus in on it through a telescope. Cut out your shapes and super glue them to your cardboard squares. Allow the glue to dry for a few minutes before you begin.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

All of the ones that I used had a meaning to me personally. The one pictured above is Cancer and is the zodiac of my son and my grandmother. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

I made different size stamps because there are some stars that are “bigger” than others in each constellation. Only do one constellation at a time so that you do not forget which belongs to what star.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Pull the scarf tight when you are doing this so that you do not get any smudges. You can also use solid line sif you want but the dotted lines give more of a trendy look.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Advent calendars have gained popularity over the past several years. Advent marks the beginning of the Christmas season and in Latin means “arrival” which represents the approach of Christ’s birth. The first known advent’s date back several centuries and had a more religious meaning than some we commonly see today. </div>

As a child one of my fondest memories was our Christmas countdown. I get my creativity and craftiness from my grandmother, “Ma”. She handmade a Christmas Bell countdown that hung on the wall along with our other holiday décor. Normally I saw these made with paper links, but ours had chocolate kisses! Each night we would take a kiss until they were all gone...on Christmas Eve. The excitement I felt as a child stayed with me, and when my son was born I couldn’t wait until he was old enough to partake in the fun! </div>

When I started looking around at different countdown ideas years ago, there were not a whole lot of things I could find online. Now if you go to websites like Pinterest, type in “advent” and you will be overwhelmed by the number of different images you see. Some seem to be for more decorative purposes, while others are for fun. Advent calendars are for all ages and a great way to have a family tradition that will always be included in treasured memories for years to come.</div>

This advent was kind of like one of my son’s gifts. Each day had a special surprise inside. I took two 16 x 20 canvases and painted them. Take 24 clothespins and adhere Christmas scrapbook paper to them. Hot glue them to the canvas. I used 24 mini sacks and added little gifts inside. <br />

Tie them up with baker's twine (I made this myself using kite string and grey markers) the bakers twine was for a little bit of decoration as well as to ensure that he didn’t peep. This advent is fun to make and would go well with rustic themed décor. Years ago I worked in a restaurant that sold deserts in these mini buckets. Most people just threw them away (crazy right?) so I collected them and put them up for a rainy day! I found the old potato chip display at the thrift store for less than a buck. I made chalkboard labels by using a craft punch and cardstock along with chalkboard paint. All the evergreen swag was a yard sale find for a quarter. Inside each bucket I place different activities to do each night until Christmas. A few are a clue as to where a small gift might be hidden. This advent would be great for older children.<br />

im so glad i got the idea to try to make these...it started when i saw in Lowe's Creative Ideas magazine. the tutorial they showed looked so easy...weeeellll...it was easy but the first time was hard! and there are some flaws to their recipe!</div>

mix equal parts of perlite/quickrete/peat moss into a large container (make sure your gloves are on!)</div>

for the three planters that I made I used 4 quarts of each mixed together. then add your water. add water until you have the consistency of cottage cheese and when you ball up the mixture it kinda stays together. (see above photo)</div>

next spray your containers with your pam/cooking spray. for the first attempt i followed the instructions and used a separate container to stack on the inside and press the edges together. (see photo below of containers inside the bag) this method made it difficult to remove them. it messed up my containers because even with the pam i had to break them to remove them. i waited 2 days and tried to remove from the molds and this was the result.</div>

sadly i had to start over...so i did a little research and saw a video from a few years ago on <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/268962/hypertufa-pots" target="_blank">martha stewart's (my hero) show</a>. they did not use an interior mold instead they just packed it into the mold(see photo above)...because who cares what the inside of your planter looks like?? you are gonna have it covered with soil & plants!</div>

 after a few days i used a rubber hammer (or in my case a rubber tip for a regular hammer) and beat lightly around the edges. slide it out of the mold and use a piece of sand paper to sand any rough edges. place them back into the plastic bag and store them in a dry place for a few weeks. it's very humid here in the south and i found i had to wait an extra week to make sure they were cured. i did not drill a hole in them like it says to...not sure if thats going to be a problem but for drainage i used rocks in the bottom layer. i was too afraid to try to drill since my first batch fell apart and this had been 6 weeks in the making since i first started the project. here is my end result.</div>

so far they have held up nicely even in the rain. it's been 2 weeks and i havent had any problems. my next batch i will be using some of the techniques martha mentioned for adding texture and patterns...might even try some concrete dye to make colored planters for christmas gifts this year!</div>

so i have been hella busy trying to get my house in order so i can start inviting guests over...needless to say i have 2 day jobs on top of being mom to one, aunt to 4, and master to one cute but sometimes annoying little pup. at the end of the week i wonder how the heck things went by so quickly. with that being said it shouldn't be surprising that i forgot to think of something to make for my son's awesome teacher & his super awesome bus driver (who is changing routes after 19 years....im terribly upset about this but i wish her the best! xoxox ms. gloria)<br />

luckily....i have my succulent garden started with donations from my mom & my awesome aunt j. so i decide to pass along some "family heirlooms" to 2 ladies who mean a lot! i search the aisle of B's $ store and find nada...next is the F $ and i find for a buck a piece some hanging candle voltives. light bulbs flash and i purchase them. i head to the house...clean them...paint them pastel pink...add my potting soil and a succulent and tah:dah! something they arent gonna get from anyone else!!! i add a few elements to dress them up. i hope they enjoy...last minute sometimes has better results than careful planning!<br />

i decided to try a new form of advent calendar this year. mr. b has gotten bored with the candy countdowns....the paper chain countdown....and the countdown the christmas scene calendar we have used in the past. i took two 16 x 20 canvases and painted them (one green and one red) </div>

i took 24 clothespins and adhered christmas scrapbook paper to them. i hot glued them to the canvas. i used 24 mini sacks ( i wanted to use brown craft sacks but went with the white instead) and added little gifts inside. i tied them up with baker's twine that i made myself out of kite string and grey markers (tutorial to come soon) the bakers twine was for a little bit of decoration as well as to ensure that mr. b didn't peep.</div>

i printed the numbers on top of digital scrapbook paper that i made and punched with a circle scalloped 1.5' punch. i adhered them to the sacks in case i wanted to change the calendar next year. i had a last minute idea to do a deal or no deal type of thing...but maybe for next year.</div>
